Hakui

Hakui is the city at the south-west gate of the Noto Peninsula, and drivers and riders use it for the Chirihama Nagisa Driveway, the beach you can drive along. Heavy rain on 27 August 2026 damaged roads inland from Hakui, so check Ishikawa's road map before you head into the hills.
Road closure
Roads on the Noto peninsula still carry closures and detours after the 2024 earthquake
Ishikawa Prefecture's live road map on 11 October 2026 showed 150 restrictions in the Noto towns, 35 of them full closures and about 100 one-lane sections. Route 249 has been closed in Suzu between Utsuyama and Umagase since January 2024, the Noto Satoyama Kaido runs one lane between Nanao and Nakajima until 25 December 2026, and the Hakui to Ganmon cycle path is closed at Shika. Check the prefecture's map before you plan a ride, and travel with care for towns that are still rebuilding.

Things to do in Hakui
- Ishikawa satoyama satoumi
Hakui's station sits on the JR line to Nanao, and the Noto Satoyama Kaido has an exit at Chirihama for the beach road. The Ishikawa tourism body describes the driveway as a beach you drive on ordinary tyres, and the prefecture closes it when the waves run high.
After the rain of 27 August 2026, Route 415 runs on one lane at three collapsed shoulders in Hakui, including Sugaike and Mikohara, with no end date set. Three roads from Hakui and neighbouring Hodatsushimizu toward the Toyama border have been closed since that day. The cycle path from Hakui to Ganmon is closed at Kamaya in Hakui while a bridge comes out, and at sections further north in Shika.
Worth knowing
- Swans winter on Ochigata lagoon east of Hakui from late October to about mid March; the tourism body asks you to watch quietly, since a startled flock may abandon the feeding ground.
