Kamikochi is a high valley in the Northern Alps west of Matsumoto that private cars can never enter, and it suits walkers from late April to mid-November; the road and everything in the valley close from 16 November to mid-April.

Private cars, rental cars and motorbikes are banned beyond the Kama Tunnel all year. Coming from Matsumoto, you park at Sawando and change to a shuttle bus or taxi. From the Takayama side the change happens at the Akandana car park in Hirayu. Direct buses from several cities run straight into the valley in season with no change at all.
The season opens with a ceremony in late April and closes with another on 15 November. In 2026 most hotels take their last guests on 13 or 14 November, and a few huts deeper up the valley close at the start of the month. Over winter the inns and shops shut, transport stops at the tunnel, and anyone heading in must file a plan and treat it as winter mountaineering.
Kamikochi sits inside Chubu Sangaku National Park, and its rules are short: feed no wildlife, carry out all your litter, stay on the paths, leave pets at home and fly no drones. Yakedake, the active volcano above the valley, sat at Japan Meteorological Agency eruption alert level 1 on 11 October 2026, after JMA lowered it from level 2 on 4 March 2026. At level 2 JMA restricts the area around the crater, so check its Yakedake page before you hike toward the summit.
Worth knowing
- Check the Kamikochi news page after heavy rain; several riverside paths closed for parts of late August 2026.
- Bring a layer more than you think you need. The valley runs cooler than the lowlands below.
