Wakura Onsen

Wakura Onsen suits travellers who want a hot, salty sea-side spring on Nanao Bay, with the Soyu public bath reopened and a free foot bath by the water. Eleven inns take guests again, and some of them still run from temporary quarters.
Road closure
Roads on the Noto peninsula still carry closures and detours after the 2024 earthquake
Ishikawa Prefecture's live road map on 11 October 2026 showed 150 restrictions in the Noto towns, 35 of them full closures and about 100 one-lane sections. Route 249 has been closed in Suzu between Utsuyama and Umagase since January 2024, the Noto Satoyama Kaido runs one lane between Nanao and Nakajima until 25 December 2026, and the Hakui to Ganmon cycle path is closed at Shika. Check the prefecture's map before you plan a ride, and travel with care for towns that are still rebuilding.

Know before you bathe
Soyu asks you to wash with plain tap water before using soap, since the salty spring stops soap lathering. After the bath, pat yourself dry and leave the salt on your skin to hold the warmth.
Getting there
Soyu sits five minutes by Nanao bus from JR Wakura Onsen station, beside the Wakura Onsen stop, with about 75 free parking spaces.
Wakura calls itself the hot spring of the sea. The association traces it to around 806 to 810 and tells the legend of a white heron healing itself in the bubbling bay. The water carries so much salt that Soyu holds its pools at about 42°C in spring and autumn, 41°C in summer and 43°C in winter, and suggests three to ten minutes for a first soak.
Nanao city and the Pokemon With You Foundation opened the free Wakura Pokemon foot bath in Yuttari Park on 12 May 2026. At the Yumoto plaza, where a bronze heron marks the source, you can lower a raw egg into the spring and lift out a lightly salted onsen egg in 13 to 16 minutes from spring to autumn, or 18 to 25 minutes in winter.

- Buy eggs at a shop nearby and cook them at the Yumoto plaza source; the water is very hot, so keep hands clear.
