Know before you bathe
No photographs at the outdoor baths. Since Kumamoto Prefecture revised its ordinance, none of the outdoor baths are mixed, so couples and families who want to bathe together book a private bath.
Getting there
Kurokawa sits about 700 metres up in the hills north of the Aso caldera. The Kyushu Odan bus from Kumamoto and Yufuin and buses from Hakata reach it only three times a day each way, and every seat must be booked by the day before. The association says a car is the easiest way in.
Kurokawa started after the war with six inns that set out to build a hot spring village of outdoor baths and to shape its look together. The nyuto tegata pass grew from that idea, to help two inns that had no room for an outdoor bath of their own. Today the 30 inns treat the whole valley as one ryokan, with the lanes as corridors and the trees as the garden.
With a pass you pick three of 25 outdoor baths. Each inn stamps the wooden tag at its front desk, and when you are done you can keep it or leave it at the village's Jizo hall as an offering.
Winter is cold at 700 metres, and nights run three to five degrees colder than the lowlands. From late December to the end of March the Yuakari event lights the village with bamboo lanterns, which look best with snow on the ground. The toilets at the Kurokawa car park close from December to March.
Worth knowing
- Send your tattoo question through the association's contact form a few days ahead, since the answer depends on the inn.
- Daikanbo, the great lookout over the Aso caldera, makes a stop on the road between Aso and Kurokawa.
