The Fujisan stage is the Tour of Japan's queen stage, a 62 km race that ends with 11.4 km up the Fuji Azami Line to Subashiri at an average of 10 per cent, and it suits fans who want to watch the pros on a climb the organisers rate above Alpe d'Huez; the road closes before the riders arrive, so whoever goes up to watch stays up until mid-afternoon.

Date rule: One stage of the Tour of Japan, which runs over eight days in late May
In 2026 the stage started at the entrance to Fuji Reien with an 8.1 km parade, then raced 62.1 km round a circuit near the cemetery before heading through Subashiri town to the climb. The Tour of Japan puts the Azami Line ascent at 11.4 km with 1,160 metres of height gain, an average of 10 per cent and pitches of 22, and the organisers compare it with Alpe d'Huez. A last wall of steep road waits about 500 metres from the line, and the weather and temperature at the top can differ sharply from the start.
The stage's circuit uses part of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic road race course, and Oyama is also home to Fuji Speedway, which hosted the Olympic road races. The Tour of Japan once raced an Izu stage at the Japan Cycle Sports Center near Shuzenji every year, until the Sagamihara stage took its place, so the Fujisan stage is now the race's only day in the region.
For the 2026 race Oyama ran paid spectator bus tours and course walks, and the finish car park at Subashiri fifth station holds only about 20 cars. Spectators may not step onto or cross the course while the race is on. JR Gotemba Station and Suruga-Oyama Station both connect to the start by bus in about 25 minutes.
Worth knowing
- Ride the Azami Line yourself outside race day from Fuji Cycle Gate at Suruga-Oyama Station, which rents sports e-bikes.
- Bring rain gear and warm layers to the finish, since the stage committee warns of big swings in weather between start and top.
