The Mt. Fuji Hill Climb sends about 8,500 riders up the closed Fuji Subaru Line each June, 24 timed kilometres and 1,255 metres to the fifth station, and suits any fit rider who wants a mass climb on Fuji with a forgiving cut-off; the fifth station can sit near 6°C at the finish, so pack winter gloves for the group descent.
Riders start in waves from Fuji Hokuroku Park in Fujiyoshida, with the organiser-selected men and women first at 6:30 and the age-group riders following in blocks of 1,600 every half hour. The full course runs 25 km with 1,270 metres of climbing, timed over the last 24 km from the Tainai cave entrance junction, at an average of 5.2 per cent and never more than 7.8. A timed mountain sprint covers the steepest kilometre, between 19 and 20 km.
The gradient stays gentle enough that more than 98 per cent of starters have finished in each of the last four years, and the oldest finisher in 2025 was 83. Age-group men averaged 1 hour 43 minutes and women 2 hours 5 minutes that year. A pacer in the fifth wave rides for the 90-minute mark that many people chase.
Nobody descends alone. From 8:30 groups of 200 to 300 riders leave the fifth station every 15 minutes behind descent leaders, and the 25 km run down chills you faster than you expect. You hand in a bag of warm clothes the day before, no larger than 40 by 60 by 10 cm, and it waits for you at the top.
Riders who enter from overseas pay ¥20,000 through RUNNET's international site, and the Fuji Hill Ride Tour adds a guided ride on the Friday before. Cars cannot park at the venue, and the organisers sell places in designated car parks with the entry. From Shinjuku the train runs to Otsuki and on to Fujikyu's Fujisan Station, and with no regular bus to the park, riders take a taxi or ride about 30 minutes on the open road. The organisers give 3 per cent of entry fees to Fuji conservation, ¥3,073,797 in 2025.
Worth knowing
- Racers must wear a helmet and gloves, and leather or cloth helmets are banned. Take off baskets, mirrors and kickstands before race day.
- Registration happens only on the Saturday before the race, so book a bed nearby that night; Fujikyu Travel sells participant packages through the race website.
