Gassan opens when other resorts close. Its lift starts running in early April and keeps going into June. In 2026 the season ran from 10 April to 14 June. After that the pair lift kept carrying hikers on single and return tickets.
The patrolled area covers the slopes west of the lift, including Ubagatake. Everything else is unmanaged backcountry, and Gassan's local rule asks every tourer to file an entry form at the lower lift station. Rescues outside the patrolled area or after hours are charged at cost; a groomer or snowmobile costs ¥10,000 an hour.
Gassan is also one of the three sacred mountains of Dewa Sanzan. Gassan Shrine on the summit opens only from 1 July to 15 September, so spring skiers pass a closed mountain shrine. A 2026 day pass cost ¥5,800 for adults and ¥3,500 for primary-school children. During the opening week from 10 to 17 April it dropped to ¥5,000. A return ride on the pair lift cost ¥1,800 for hikers and tourers.
