Restaurant Toyoken
レストラン 東洋軒33°18′ N 131°30′ EOther
Toyoken suits anyone who wants toriten where it started, and it is a big, busy family restaurant away from the station.
What to order
- Honke toriten, the original, as a plate or a set meal
Miyamoto Shiro, who had cooked at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo and in the imperial household kitchens, opened Toyoken on 1 April 1926 as Oita's first restaurant. Japan's ministry of agriculture credits his kitchen with the first toriten, boneless chicken fried like tempura so that diners did not have to wrestle with bone-in karaage.
The family has run it for four generations, and the menu is Chinese at heart with toriten as the star. The restaurant now stands at Ishigaki-higashi in north Beppu, with a second branch in the Tokiwa department store.
Worth knowing
- From Beppu Station, Kamenoi bus 24 to Funakoji stops a five-minute walk away.
- The restaurant has a 60-space car park.
