Tamaruya suits a Mizusawa udon pilgrimage to the shop that calls itself the founder of the style, and it closes mid-afternoon or earlier.
What to order
- White juwari Mizusawa udon, cold, with dipping sauce
- Koden Kirimugi, whole-wheat udon stone-ground in-house
Tamaruya has kept a shop at the gate of Mizusawa Kannon since Tensho 10 (1582) and calls itself the original Mizusawa udon house. It makes two noodles: a white udon of domestic flour only, and Koden Kirimugi, a whole-wheat noodle from wheat it stone-grinds itself. Both use Mizusawa water and natural salt, and the broth draws on three kinds of kelp.
Buses run from Shibukawa Station toward Ikaho and stop at Mizusawa after about 20 minutes. The shop opened every day through Golden Week in 2026.
