Takino suits anyone in Aizu-Wakamatsu who wants wappa-meshi (rice steamed with toppings in a round cypress box) at the restaurant that calls itself the dish's originator, and the trade-off is a walk of about a kilometre from Nanukamachi Station.
What to order
- Gosshu wappa with five toppings (¥2,530)
- Herring pickled with sansho leaf (nishin sansho-zuke, ¥1,100)
Takino's building first stood at Itozawa on the Shimotsuke Kaido road towards Nikko, where it served as the magistrate's office, and it was moved to Aizu-Wakamatsu and rebuilt, so you eat among heavy beams and dark timber. The salmon box and the mushroom box each cost ¥2,420 with two small starters and miso soup. The seven-topping yokubari box costs ¥2,750, and crab or salmon roe raises the price to ¥3,520. Add a bowl of the Aizu soup called kozuyu for ¥660.
Takino opens every day of the year from 11:00 to 20:00 and closes an hour earlier on Sundays. It sits on Kanetsukido-koji lane in Sakaemachi, about 1.2 km from Nanukamachi Station, with parking for 40 cars across two lots. Breakfast has run by reservation since April 2026.
Worth knowing
- Order the Aizu Monogatari set (¥2,750) if you want local soba alongside the five-topping box.
- Book ahead for the Aizu kaiseki course, which costs ¥5,500 and changes with the season.
