Pyonpyonsha Morioka Ekimae
ぴょんぴょん舎 盛岡駅前店39°42′ N 141°08′ EYakiniku¥¥
Pyonpyonsha's station shop suits anyone with a short stop in Morioka who wants the city's cold reimen two minutes from the trains, and the trade-off is a big yakiniku hall over three floors where tour groups book the top one.
What to order
- Morioka reimen, with the kimchi on the side if you are unsure about the heat
- A noodle and yakiniku set with beef and namul (¥2,310)
- Kuwa-no-ha reimen, with Iwate mulberry leaf worked into the noodles
The cold noodles that took the name Morioka reimen at the 1986 Nippon Men Summit in Morioka came from Pyonpyontei, which reopened as Pyonpyonsha the following year. The Ekimae branch fills the Jaran Building on the main road out of Morioka Station and stays open from 11:00 to 23:00 every day. Noodles are pressed to order from wheat flour and potato starch, so they come out chewy and glassy, and they sit in a chilled broth of beef and chicken with the house cabbage and daikon kimchi. A slice of watermelon goes on top in summer, and nashi pear in winter.
A bowl of reimen cost ¥1,210 on the December 2025 menu, and most tables order it alongside a plate of grilled beef. Pick your heat when you order. The kimchi comes in three strengths, or on the side (betsu-kara) so you can stir it in a spoonful at a time. The Iwate Zanmai plate lays Maezawa, Iwate Tankaku and Shizukuishi wagyu side by side for ¥4,400 if you want to taste the prefecture's beef.
Worth knowing
- The lunch menu runs on weekdays only. On weekends and public holidays the dinner menu applies from opening.
- Ask for the half bowl (¥990) if you plan to eat yakiniku first, since the noodles are filling.
