Hiraso Nara
柿の葉ずし 平宗 奈良店34°41′ N 135°50′ ESushi
Hiraso suits a sit-down lunch of kakinoha-zushi in Nara from a maker founded in 1861, and its trade-off is a Monday closure and no car park.
What to order
- Kakinoha-zushi of mackerel and salmon
- A seasonal kakinoha-zushi such as kinmedai or daikon
Hiraso began in 1861 in Kamiichi in Yoshino and turned the region's festival sushi into a shop product, first selling it in Osaka in 1962. Its Nara shop in Imamikado-cho has the main building and an annex called Hanare, both with dining rooms. The main building's restaurant takes last orders at 19:30, and Hanare's runs later.
Order a set of kakinoha-zushi with mackerel and salmon, then try a seasonal piece. The shop counter sells boxes to take away from 10:00, which makes a good lunch for the train out of Nara.
Worth knowing
- The shop has no parking; come on foot or use a coin car park nearby.
