Haguro-san Saikan
羽黒山参籠所 斎館38°42′ N 139°59′ EOther¥¥
The Saikan suits travellers who want Haguro's shojin ryori in a shrine lodging on the mountain itself, and the trade-off is that every meal needs a phone booking.
What to order
- The ten-dish shojin ryori tray
- The 2026 Hakkei tray, with a small dish for each of the eight classic views of Mt. Haguro
The Saikan is the pilgrims' lodging of Dewa Sanzan Shrine on Mt. Haguro, and it stands just past the top of the third slope on the stone-step approach. It began as Kezoin, one of the temple lodgings of the old Haguro shugendo order, and it is the only one of more than thirty such buildings left standing after the Meiji separation of Shinto and Buddhism. Tsuruoka named it a cultural property in 2005. The kitchen serves the plant-based temple cuisine of the mountain, built on wild vegetables and bamboo shoots gathered in the Dewa Sanzan foothills, and the shrine says this food was once set before Basho. This is a place of living worship, so dress for a shrine, keep voices low and follow the staff's lead.
Worth knowing
- By car, follow the Haguro toll road to the first car park at the Haguro-san rest house and go about 500 metres on; the shrine warns that map apps send drivers down an old closed road.
- The shrine keeps the toll road open all winter and warns that it is not cleared early in the morning or at night.
- For 2026 the kitchen serves a special Hakkei tray (八景膳) from 1 March to mid-December.
