Dewaya suits anyone driving the Gassan road who wants mountain-vegetable soba at a lunch counter with no booking, and the trade-off is a kitchen that shuts at 14:00.
What to order
- Gassan sansai soba in the iron pot
- Seasonal tempura
Dewaya began more than ninety years ago as an inn for pilgrims heading into Dewa Sanzan, and it built its name on cooking sansai, the wild vegetables of Mt. Gassan. The inn's full courses need booking and cost from ¥8,800. The soba shop on the ground floor takes walk-ins at lunch. Its Gassan sansai soba comes in an iron pot loaded with whatever the mountain gave that season, so the bowl changes through the year. Tabelog gave the inn a Silver award for 2025 and 2026.
Mazawa sits a few minutes from Nishikawa interchange on the Yamagata Expressway, and the town bus to Gassan Shizu Onsen stops two minutes away.
Worth knowing
- Late October brings new-season soba; nameko and mukitake mushrooms follow into November, according to the inn's seasonal calendar.
