Aizuya Honten
会津屋本店34°38′ N 135°29′ EOther¥
Aizuya suits anyone curious to taste takoyaki the way the shop says it first made them in 1935, and its trade-off is a trip south of the centre to Tamade.
What to order
- Ganso takoyaki, eaten plain first
- Ganso radio-yaki with beef tendon and konnyaku
Aizuya opened in 1933, and the company says its founder Tomekichi Endo created takoyaki two years later. The main shop stands at exit 1 of Tamade station on the Yotsubashi subway line, and it serves the balls without sauce so the dashi in the batter carries the flavour. Vinegar soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce sit on the side if you want them.
Order the radio-yaki as well. It is the ball Endo sold before takoyaki, filled with beef tendon and konnyaku in place of octopus.
Worth knowing
- The shop opens every day of the year except New Year's Day.
