- The naijin (inner sanctuary) and the Okaidan need a ticket from the machine to the right as you enter the Hondo from the front.
- The nainaijin beyond the naijin is where priests chant and where the temple holds prayers and memorial services.
- Zenko-ji is a working temple with services every day, so keep your voice low in the Hondo and leave the space before the altar to people at prayer.
- Worshippers rub the wooden Binzuru statue in the outer hall on the spot where their own body aches, hoping for healing, so touch it gently and with that purpose.
The Hondo is a National Treasure, and its main image, the Zenko-ji Nyorai, is an absolute hidden Buddha that stays out of sight. Worshippers pray in the naijin, a tatami hall of about 150 mats facing the nainaijin where the priests chant. O-asaji, the morning service, runs every day, and the inner sanctuary opens an hour before it starts.
From the nainaijin a passage leads down to the Okaidan, a pitch-dark corridor under the altar. You walk it with one hand on the wall, feeling for the Gokuraku no Jomae, the lock of the Pure Land, that hangs directly beneath the hidden Buddha. The temple teaches that touching it binds you to the Buddha and promises rebirth in the Pure Land. In earlier times pilgrims walked it chanting, dressed as they would be in their coffins.
A combined ticket covers the inner sanctuary and Okaidan, the Sanmon gate, the sutra hall and the temple museum for ¥1,500 for adults in 2026. The inner sanctuary ticket alone costs ¥800. From Tokyo, the Hokuriku Shinkansen reaches Nagano Station in about 1 hour 30 minutes.
In 2027 Zenko-ji holds its Gokaicho. The temple brings the Maedachi Honzon, an Important Cultural Property that stands in for the hidden Buddha, from its treasury into the main hall. A pillar about 10 metres tall goes up in front of the Hondo, tied to the Buddha by a cord, and touching it is said to join you to the Buddha. Check the Gokaicho site for the dates.
Worth knowing
- Go early: the inner sanctuary opens an hour before the morning service.
- On 31 December the halls close at 13:00.
- Ask the temple office about wheelchair loans before you visit.
