Omi-Hachiman's canal and merchant streets suit a slow afternoon on foot or by boat, though this is a lived-in town and the canal crowds up in cherry season.

Hachiman-bori is the moat below the castle that Toyotomi Hidetsugu, Hideyoshi's nephew, built on Hachimanyama, and the town grew rich on it as a port for Lake Biwa's shipping. White-walled storehouses and stone paving still line the water, and the stretch from Hakuun-bashi to Meiji-bashi turns up often in period dramas and films. Local people clean the canal themselves, and it shows. At night lights run from Hakuun-bashi to Shinmachi-hama.
A short walk away, Shinmachi-dori and the streets around it hold the old houses of the Omi merchants. It was the first district in Shiga that the state chose as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Look up for udatsu, the raised firewalls on the roofs, and for the pines leaning over garden walls. The former Nishikawa residence, an Important Cultural Property, opens as part of the city museum.
Boats leave the canal pier from 10:00 to 16:00 every day without booking, weather permitting. The ride costs ¥1,500 for adults and ¥1,000 for children in 2026, and a dog you can hold rides free. From JR Omi-Hachiman Station the Chomeiji-bound Ohmi Railway bus takes about seven minutes.
Worth knowing
- Park in the paid Taga or Obata tourist car parks; the old streets have no room for cars.
- Come in mid-March for the Sagicho festival at Himure Hachimangu, beside the canal.
